I have a domain registered at 1and1.com (antiochwebhost.com). Previously, I had ns[1-2] go to 1 1and1.com server and ns[3-4] go to another.

I've recently leased a server at DediCentral.com as they offer an unlimited plesk license at a ridiculously reasonable price.

In attempting to forward on the DNS for ns3/ns4 to my new server, I hit a wall and bothered many different parties until it was made clear that 1and1.com are responsible for my domain's glue and setting up nameservers in DNS.

I've requested that 1and1 do this and after about 5 e-mails over 2 days, a tech responded with a proper answer:

Dear Chris XXXXXX, (Customer ID: XXXXXX)

Thank you for contacting us.

We have noticed that you have antiochwebhost.com, ns3.antiochwebhost.com and ns4.antiochwebhost.com, domain and subdomains. You changed the nameserver for antiochwebhost.com, and changed the IP Address for ns3.antiochwebhost.com and ns4.antiochwebhost.com.

The settings that you have made for the subdomains will no longer take
effect, because the subdomain is no longer using the 1and1 nameservers.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

In other words -- if you are thinking of registering a domain at 1and1.com and want to use it for your nameservers address, you CANNOT if you have any non 1and1.com servers.

This is ridiculous and I've moved my domain to OpenSRS after apologizing to many customers for downtime. I thought that this e-mail should be archived here as a definite answer if anyone else runs into this.

You don't say if you have a root server and were using ns1 and ns2 with dns master on that machine or if you were using 1&1's dns configuration through their control panel with dns from 1&1.

If I understand correctly what you are describing this would be true for any combination of dns servers from different companies.

I have a number of domains setup with dns master on my root server and slaves at zoneedit.com; I just set the domain to use the appropriate external dns servers in my 1&1 control panel. In one case the two zoneedit servers are all that is published, the master (on my root server) is not listed in dns.

Yes, 1&1 have to provide the glue for your nameservers by publishing them to the root servers (which is what you provide when you select "My Nameserver" in the control panel), but you have to provide the NS records in your dns server for all the nameservers you are listing -- ns1, ns2, ns3, and ns4 all must have NS records in the zone for antiochwebhost.com. Since 1&1 were not hosting the zone file for antiochwebhost.com, they couldn't publish the NS records.
