Hello,
About two weeks ago I signed up for a Root III server in the US at 1and1.com. I received a notice that due to the high demand it would take approx two weeks to configure my hardware. Thats fine, I understand that and not a problem. Later that evening I got an email saying my server was ready for use. I was pleasantly suprised!
Currently I'm going thru and learning Plesk and how the server works. I notice that when I initially connect to the server via SSH, FTP or Plesk it seems to take about 30 sec to resolve the IP appress, dont' have any domains active at the moment. So I did a whois and trace-route on the ip and its shoowing that my IP addresses, I have two for running my own nameserver, are in Germany.
So, I'm wondering where exactly is my server being physically hosted. Is it in Germany or is it in the US someplace and all of 1and1 traffic goes thru a NOC in Germany.
Anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks!

I think it's because 1and1 is based out of Europe or was successful in Europe before coming to the US. So their infrastructure sort of carried over into the US. Your servers should be in a data center in New York or New Jersey somewhere. I forget exactly where it is. Look at a traceroute to your IP address and it should give you a better idea where it's physically or geographically located.

1 and 1 ( or oneandone as they are better known in Europe) originates from Germany. They currently have their Global HQ somewhere in Germany and are partnered with Schlund ( who may actually own a stake in them, its hard to work out.) Anyway, they have a large data centre in Germany, a bigger data centre near London UK and their US operations are based in PA (Pensylvania ?) States-side. I think they also have a French operation.
From a traceroute on my own servers it can appear as if they are located somewhere in Germany, but I know they are physically located in
Slough ... which is a rather boring backwater near London.

For the FTP issue, in /etc/proftpd.conf, add:
IdentLookups off
Use ReverseDNS off
Restart xinetd fo rthe change to take effect. On my RH9 box, it's /sbin/service xinetd restart
HTH!

I received an reply from 1&1 and they said that their servers in the US are in New York. After doing a traceroute it does appear my server is in New York but if you look it up on DNSTools.com is shows the country as Germany. <shrugs>
Oh well. Guess it doesn't matter as long as the uptime is good and the connection is fast :D

It's only the IP-Owner 'Schlund & Partners AG' who are in Germany, i think.
The IP-Owner is not bind on the same country.

1and1 only have an office in Slough. The data centre is actually in Karlsruhe, Germany.
The Karlsruhe data centre:

and the surprisingly identical 'UK' data centre:

Ha - the pictures they show there are exactly the same they showed for their USA data ctr rollout two years ago, and is also shown on the http://order.1and1.com pages...
I think they're purposely being cagey about their locations etc. I did twist their arm because in hosting a .us domain I have to certify that the servers are truly in the USA (!), and they did fess up to it. (One said PA, one said NY)
Apparently they got a big IP block and are using those IP addresses for their USA and UK data centres. Basically, the IP block countries are moot anymore (not worth going by).
