Google Sitemaps is an easy way for you to help improve your coverage in the Google index. It's a collaborative crawling system that enables you to communicate directly with Google to keep them informed of all your web pages, and when you make changes to these pages.

Google Sitemaps consists of a simple set of scripts and configuration file that you can simply run from a cron job on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis depending on how active your website is. The client software indexes all your files in your website directory and then generates XML files containing the index information and then contacts Google directly to notify them the updated information is ready for pickup.

I signed up for Google Sitemaps yesterday, and quadruple-checked the name of my required root html file. I have it named exactly, case-sensitively, as Sitemaps directed I should do.

However, whenever I click "Verify" I get one of two messages: 1) We're busy now, check later; or 2) Sorry, we couldn't find your root file. "Did you maybe spell it wrong?"

Suggestions?

maybe the key here is to just be patient, even when you get the message that the verification process couldn't find your file. 12 or so hours after I submitted the file, and after numerous messages saying it couldn't find the file, the SiteMaps process finally completed.:D

Yes I get errors while it's processing I think it's just extra debug from the scripts that is getting output. We just ignore them and Google crawlers show up on our site on a regular basis.

I've been using http://gsitecrawler.com/ to create my sitemaps for Google - very efficient app once you have mastered the settings for it.
