There has been a huge philosophical debate about whether or not you should even bother with keywords and/or meta tags in your HTML code. Many search engines such as Google don't even bother with them, but nobody really knows that for sure. Web designers are always finding new ways to exploit the search engine algorithms and the search engine companies are always changing the way they spider or crawl pages. So it's an ongoing cat and mouse game. For the rest of us, it's best to take the middle road and use every weapon in your arsenal to market your website. Keywords and meta tags being one of them, don't go overboard try to remain conservative but focus more on the technical correctness of using the keywords and meta tags instead of trying to put in 200 keywords. Use the following guidelines

1. Choose only 10-15 keywords for your site
2. Try to use less than 50 words in your description
3. Try to use the same keywords in your Title tag and description tag that you have in your keywords tag, in other words try to tie them all together.
4. A little off track but definitely related to keywords and meta tags, try to use image file names, alt tags, description tags in your HTML that are the same or relevant to your meta tags and keywords.

Use some webmaster resources from other sites to check your keywords and meta tags. They may have some insight to help you tune your keywords and/or meta tags.

The bottom line is that there is no right or wrong way but experience has proven that a more conservative approach to keywords and meta tags has been more successful.
