This forum was created becuase 1and1 products and services have been superior in both quality and price. My own experience with 1and1 technical support has left something less than to be desired. With that in mind, we have created an unofficial forum community to help other 1and1 customers, resellers, web designers, hosting companies and the like. This forum community is in no way sponsored or affiliated by 1and1, at least not yet.

Thanks,

Very true - I have found 1&1's packages to be very affordable and fast.

It's just the support that lets them down - most notably the root server support. I know root servers are only for "experienced users" but to say support is only limited to networking and hardware is taking it a bit too far.

Anyway, good idea creating these forums, eWebtricity, I hope the userbase grows :)

James.

Since 1&1 runs data centers in Germany, France, the UK and the US, it might be a good idea to specify in posts which data center you're referring to.

As regards 1&1 (US) support for root servers, while it certainly would be nice to get a little more support (particularly in Plesk licensing issues), it's definately a situation where you get what you pay for.

$50, $70 and $90 a month for dedicated servers is about half of what I saw at the competition when I was shopping around. Since the costs for hardware, bandwidth and infrastructure are about the same for everyone, there's only one place left to cut costs so they can sell profitably at those rates--and that's support.

For me it seemed a reasonable trade-off. In exchange for lower monthly hosting bills, I find help elsewhere. Occasionally even paying for it.

I concur with the cost cutting measures and seeking help elsewhere (hence this forum), but it boggles me why they don't run their own forums which basically become self-sufficient with minimal interaction from real 1and1 techs answering occassional questions. Not to mention the fact that it drives their customer base and develops a hot bed of contacts for them. As well as 1 tutorial in a forum like this goes along way with the community adding their experiences and insight to it.

I am in a constant state of frustration when trying to deal with 1&1 tech support and am tired of being passed around the globe from one call centre to another without any of the problems being resolved.

Hopefully this forum can be built into a community of knowledgable 1and1 users that will eventually negate the need to deal with 1&1 support for the majority of issues.

How much is excess bandwith on the US root servers?

Here in the UK its 0.5 pence (0.9 cents) per MB - which adds up quite a bit when you only have 10GB to use :(

In the US its $0.99 per GB above and beyond the included 500GB monthly. As per usual here in the UK we pay a huge premium, so much so I am considering setting up a US 1&1 account using a friends postal address.

That is CRAZY markup!

Why is bandwith so expensive over here?!

Hey eWeb

Well done on this. Talk about a glaring omission - this was a much needed gathering point for us all.

I echo your overall sentiments as regards 1and1 on quality/price. I also am curious if anyone else has found that their toll-free service seems to have improved somewhat as of the last few days. Maybe I am jumping the gun a bit though.

Regards all

You get a toll-free support number? cool. Over here in the UK we have an 0870 support number which means not only are we charged above the odds for the call, 1&1 receive a cut of the profit from the Telco. They do publish an 0845 non-geographic lo-call support number from which they get no kick-back but I'll be damned if I can get anyone to answer that phone when I call it.

So in North America you get a healthy monthly bandwith allowance, toll-free support and according to the website a free SSL Cert? Just curious, but what else do the North American 1&1 customers receive as part of the package?
