Is 1and1 providing the gameserver module with their root servers? From reading on the SW Soft forums it looks like they are but when contacting 1and1 support to get the key they deny supporting it. Never the less I am going to continue buggin them till I get an answer that sounds like th support rep is actually competent.

My original email

It has come to my attention that 1and1 is offering the Plesk GameServer Module with the FC2 Plesk 7.5 servers. I have upgraded to FC2 and Plesk 7.5.2 but I am unable to use the gameserver module because it requiers a license. I was told to contact you inorder to get a license for the gameserver module.

Their Reply

Unfortunately, we do not offer any support for Gameservers. Moreover you are "on your own" when installing and running a gameserver.

My reply

My problem isn't with the gameserver itself (I am quite capable of looking after those). My problem is with the Plesk license key that seems to be missing for the gameserver Module. I've been discussing this problem with other customers and they all received the Plesk license key for the gameserver module from you but I haven't. So I am contacting you for the license key that I am missing.

From speaking to the UK 1&1 support team I get the impression that there is still some confusion over this matter. I was actually calling to enquire as to where the 15 user (free) DrWeb license had disappeared to after the upgrade from RH9 to FC2 but tagged on the question about the game server license as an after thought (I have no actual need or use for it, but what the hell could be interesting to play around with as my server is for personal use). The particular chap I was speaking to was unsure as to how they were going to implement this as their website clearly indicates that the gameserver module is included in the package, yet their UK and US FAQ state that there is no support offered. He offered to investigate the matter and email me a response. That was atleast 3 weeks ago and I've heard nothing.

For anyone that is interested in where the DrWeb AV license has gone, 1&1 have withdrawn the license for FC2 installations as there was "considerable confusion within the customer base as to why only 15 users were supported". So, absolutely nothing to do with misleading advertising on there Root Server sales pages then .... a likely story.

Just out of interest, have you ever tried to call tech support when the US offices are closed and been passed to UK tech support?

I try to only call tech support after the UK offices have closed so that I am passed to US tech support whom I find slightly less irritating to deal with.

I've only called a few times after US hours and I've always had problems. I'm not sure who I get transfered to but they never are able to solve my problems. Thats why I deal with stuff during the US office hours.

I got a reply from 1and1 support....

Your server key is already up-to-date.

Key number PLSK.XXXXXXXX.XXXX
Key expiration date May 16, 2005

The stupidity of 1and1's support amazes me some times. I sent back the reply....

The license key for the Plesk GameServer module is missing and the support rep I
was dealing with (Paul Marano) was going to log into my server and fix the
problem. I'm guessing by installing the missing key for the Plesk Gameserver
module which was being advertised as included with 1and1 root servers and was
provided to several 1and1 customers that I've spoken to regarding this problem.

I'm not sure but I belive I've delt with this Paul Marano on another occasion and I'm finding him very good to deal with. He knows what he is talking about and actually reads the customer's trouble ticket and replying in his own words instead of copy and pasting something from the FAQ page. I would reconmend dealing with him. I know I will ask to deal with him in the future.

1and1 is now telling me that I have to reimage my server to get the proper configuration for the gameserver module.

I've had enough of their incompetance. I'm now considering moving to another provider with better support.

I'm finally getting some co-operation. They attempted to update my key but its still asking for the key for the gameserver so they've contacted SW-Soft for help.

That didn't get me any where they just told me I had to reimage my server. And because of a hdd problem I did have it reimaged. I restored all my domains but the license isn't there. (I had them install FC2 w/ Plesk 7.5.2) I contacted them and they said "We have tested the image on a few other servers and it works so we would like to reimage your server again, with your permission".

And after arguing some more I had one support rep told me they don't provide the gameserver license. But luckaly one of their support reps to me it was included with my package that they provide. So hopefully I get somewhere with this.

I'm still completely shocked that 1and1 sometimes, depending on who you talk to, says NO you don't get the gameserver and then someone else says YES you do. Depending on how much effort and pressure you put on them you might even get it. This should really be a simple YES or NO and if you have to have a certain image level or license then you may need to upgrade or reimage to meet the requirements. They need to be precise about what they offer and/or how they offer it.

They called me today and told me because of technical reasons the only way to get the key is to reimage the server. And because thats how SWSoft wants it done.

I'm giving up. Its not worth my time. The gameserver module is nice but I can run it from cmd line just as easy.

Jason, since this is a "FAQ" site can you please tell us what 1and1 said as a finaly reason as to why you didn't have the key for the CS server mod in plesk?

Jason Lee

They told me that they get there license keys randomly from the license server when the server is reimaged and it is impossible for them to manually give me a license key. Plus they added that SWSoft in fear that if 1and1 gives out the keys manually we would use them on other servers so to prevent this 1and1 is not allowed to manually give them out.

They told me that I replaced the key when I restored my backup. But I tested this at the office on our test server and the backup never changed the key when I restored it. So I have no clue what happened.

This is primary class one bull from 1&1.

The license keys that 1&1 use for Plesk are only available to 1&1 Servers and are directly assigned by sw-soft, they are not cross platform or cross provider compatible, i;ve tried. This is 1&1 not understanding their own systems. 1&1 managed to instruct sw-soft to remove dr.web av (free edition) from the 1&1 install, if they can do that then they can get the gameserver module to install.

However, my gameserver module is now playing up ... (this happened before and after I installed Jason's kernel which is still working flawlessly).

I tried to explain it to the support rep that called me in responce to my email. With no luck. It really isn't worth my time.

By the way I released a 2.6.11.4 kernel yesterday (the link is in my how-to which I posted in the how-to section) I'm still working on a grsec kernel.

2.6.11.4 is what I installed a few hours ago. Great work.

What would grsec offer me? (may need to move this post to a more relavent thread)

Basicly without going into detail it offers you enhanced security. More information http://www.grsecurity.com/
