I figured I'd try to "brand" the nameservers used with our hosted domains so they didn't so obviously say 1and1.com.

I established subdomains through the 1and1 control panel and aimed them at the IPs of the 1and1 nameservers assigned to us. Works like a charm, and the whois records now show us rather than 1and 1 as the names nameservers.

Whoops! Got a kind of rude e-mail today from 1and1 threatening to remove the domains that carried our nameserver name, not 1and1's. They gave me a drop dead date out a few weeks to change the nameservers for those domains, or else!

Sounds to me as if their marketing people are working overtime.

Anyone else experience this?"

Why not just run your own nameserver? Thats what I'm doing.

I felt more comfortable having pri and sec nameservers on seperate boxes. I'm not sure why.

I run my own domains but even that doesn't mean you won't have problems. I have my domains pointing to my nameservers and now I'm unable to change the whois data and the nameservers because their control pannel is saying there is a domain setup error although all my domains are setup properly on my end.

Also one of my domains is still pointing at 1and1's servers and I'm unable to point it to mine because their control pannel says that that domain has a domain setup error. I'm thinking there is a problem with their control pannel.

But I would reconmend using your own nameservers. All you have to do is set the nameservers to point to your 1and1 root server's IP addresses. Just make sure DNS is enabled under the domain's settings in plesk.

I recommend going with an external registrar for domain registration and management. That way you don't have your DNS dependent upon 1and1 and/or your root server in the event of a problem. As well as you have complete control over the domains and you can use SPF records for email.
