I have a Root 3 server and I would like to stream some video from it but since I've never tried streaming video from a linux box thought I'd ask here.

Has anyone ever setup streaming video on a linux box?

Any suggestions on what 3rd party apps/servers I would need to stream with?

I'd prefer free/open source since I'm just using this as a learning experience.

Any suggestions/tips/help anyone could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

Although it's not open source Real Networks has the Helix server that is free. Do you really need/want to "stream" content or just need to make it available?

I would prefer to stream to help lessen the bandwidth burden.

Not too crazy about Real Networks products. Was thinking possibly Quicktime server, I believe they have an open source version, or some sort of FLV solution. Unfortunatly havn't found a free FLV server.

FLV is the way forward.. but you'll be hard pushed to find a free encoder.
This is the one I use.

Helix is what Real Networks bases their Linux version off of which is open source...
