Herndon, VA - March 13, 2006 - Today, SWsoft (www.swsoft.com (http://www.swsoft.com/)), an established leader in server automation and virtualization software, previewed Plesk 8.0 for Linux/Unix control panel. With more than 40 new features, Plesk 8.0 represents a major upgrade for hosting providers, resellers and end users. General availability is expected by the end of March 2006.

Plesk 8.0 for Linux/Unix delivers an important new custom desktop capability to give administrators and end users significantly more control and convenience. Additional feature highlights include customizable interface templates, domain aliases, improved Virtuozzo integration, updated backup utility, integrated Acronis True Image module, enhanced system monitoring and a more efficient auto installer.

"We are very excited to announce Plesk 8.0 for Linux/UNIX as a major milestone in our company's roadmap," said Kurt Daniel, vice president of marketing and alliances, SWsoft. "Plesk 8.0 raises the standard for hosting automation with important new capabilities which come together to deliver maximum usability, integration and availability. With the new Desktop feature, control panel users can for the first time quickly and easily create a personalized, task-oriented dashboard for functions they care about most."

"Plesk already had an easy-to-use interface, but with the new Desktop feature we're able to offer another level of satisfaction for our users; they can now use custom interface templates to view what's important to them," said Joe McMillen, CEO, Cari.net (www.Cari.net (http://www.cari.net/)). "Plesk 8.0 also goes one step further by offering unique backup tools and an improved autoinstaller that will help make our installation and upgrades faster and easier in our datacenter."

That might explain the lack of new updates to 7.5.4 recently - I check about once a month and there are usually 3-4 updates to be had, but not when I checked earlier on today.

Plesk Desktop - Now administrators and clients have quick access to major management functions and they have immediate access to mission critical information and statistics.

Can someone explain this a little better... Is there actually a desktop application now that you can do administrative functions without having to use a web browser?

A few things I've found from poking around the SW Soft Plesk 8 boards...

1. Just because the updater shows P8 as an option doesn't mean that we have the proper licensing to get it. EV1 (another host similar to 1and1 but with their own support forums) hasn't upgraded their user keys to P8 yet and I doubt 1and1 has either.
http://forum.swsoft.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32154

2. P8 breaks Horde webmail because it turns safe mode on globally for PHP. I'd be strung up by people in my office if Webmail went away. You'll need to turn it off via vhost.conf for each domain.

3. You will probably have to rebuild all your vhost.conf files since P8 seem to break them.

4. You will need to uninstall SpamAssassin completely before trying to upgrade ($#%@)

5. You MUST have MySQL 4.0 or later to run Plesk 8. ART has put out 4.1.18 just in time.

6. Plesk 8 no longer has FTP backup. That'll really screw my backups up since I use the 1and1 FTP backup server. No word from SW Soft on why it's gone.

WOW!!!!!!!!!

They are some MAJOR issues! Almost doesn't seem worth upgrading at this moment... Atleast until some of those issues are cleared up!

Not major, show-stopping issues rather. I think I'll put my update on hold for a year or so....

Thanks for sharing that info Highland

Update: someone has indeed verified that 1and1 licenses DO support P8

where exactly can i find the vhost.conf file?

C-4 Hosting

I forget exactly where vhost.conf is located... But if you do a

locate <filename>

e.g. locate vhost.conf

It will give you a list of where every file named that is stored on the server

Hope that helps :)

vhost.conf will be inside your conf directory under each domain (if it exists). Unless you've created one there won't be one.

I upgraded to 8 about a week ago and so far have found no problems. This has been the only upgrade that I've had no problems. Buyer beware though...

As of right now the upgrade is probably the best way to go, the current 1and1 FC4 with Plesk 8 has some major issues.
