Windows Business I Setup

I need help setting up my server. I have been going through the 1and1 faq's for the last 3 hours and some things work but others don't. I can not get windows update or internet explorer to work to connect to microsoft from within my windows server. I have activated all of the ports like the FAQ says and I still can not get FTP to work.
I have been able to add domains, setup the smtp server (but not pop even though I turned the ports on and added the email addresses). Following the instructions for php only rendered a message about the modules not being configured.
Is there anywhere that I can go to find working FAQ's?
I have just re-imaged my server to undo all of the stuff that I have done and hopefully start fresh.
FTP is the main one I need working. Any ideas on why it doesn't work following 1and1's faq? It doesn't even get as far as checking for a username and password, nothing on port 21 is going through.

Did you contact 1&1 to remove the initial server port blocks yet (should be outlined in the welcome email)?

I had setup a root linux server a couple of months ago and it was like this, I forgot I had to confirm. That solved my main problem. PHP was still took a while to figure out how to install. 1 and 1's FAQ needs to be updated.
